Copyright Policy

gnibs is operated by Loop Social Inc. (“Loop Social”, “we”, “us”). gnibs hosts annotations that people attach to web pages. We respect copyright and respond to notices under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (“DMCA”). This page explains how to report infringement, what happens next, and how to contest a removal.

Reporting infringement

If you believe content on gnibs infringes a copyright you own or represent, send a notice to our designated agent that includes:

identification of the copyrighted work you claim is infringed;
identification of the infringing material and where it appears on gnibs (a link to the annotated page and enough detail for us to find the annotation);
your name, mailing address, telephone number, and email address;
a statement that you have a good-faith belief the use is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law;
a statement, under penalty of perjury, that the information in your notice is accurate and that you are the copyright owner or authorized to act on the owner’s behalf; and
your physical or electronic signature.

Our designated agent

What we do with valid notices

We remove or disable access to the identified material promptly, notify the person who posted it, and keep a record of the notice. In appropriate circumstances we terminate the accounts of repeat infringers.

Counter-notices

If your annotation was removed and you believe that was a mistake or misidentification, you can send our designated agent a counter-notice that includes: identification of the removed material and where it appeared; your name, address, and telephone number; a statement under penalty of perjury that you have a good-faith belief the material was removed by mistake or misidentification; a statement that you consent to the jurisdiction of the federal district court for your address (or, if outside the United States, the District of Delaware) and that you will accept service of process from the person who filed the original notice; and your physical or electronic signature. Unless the original claimant tells us they’ve filed a court action, we may restore the material in 10 to 14 business days.

A note on how gnibs works

gnibs displays annotations as a layer over web pages; it doesn’t modify the underlying pages, doesn’t keep permanent copies of them beyond short-lived performance caches, and always links to the original. If you operate a website and have concerns about gnibs displaying an annotation layer over it, write to dmca@gnibs.com and we’ll review your request.

Misrepresentation

Knowingly misrepresenting that material is infringing, or that it was removed by mistake, can make you liable for damages under 17 U.S.C. § 512(f). Please don’t send false notices.
